Do Healthy People Need Chiropractic Care?

A common misconception about chiropractic care is that it’s only for people with back or neck injuries. In actual fact though, anybody can benefit from it – even “normal” or “healthy” people!

Before we get into some of the reasons why “normal” people still need chiropractic treatment, let’s start by taking a look at what chiropractic care actually is, and what it entails.

Chiropractic treatment is a type of allied health treatment and physical therapy that helps to prevent, diagnose, manage, and treat musculoskeletal disorders.

It is performed by chiropractors, who are highly trained healthcare practitioners who specialise in promoting the health of the musculoskeletal system.

During chiropractic visits, chiropractors will use their hands to put pressure on, manually manipulate, and adjust the vertebrae of the spinal column and joints. This helps to achieve optimal spinal alignment. This manipulation is known as a “chiropractic adjustment”.

Sometimes, they may use other mechanical instruments to assist with this.

Although it is true that chiropractic care can provide pain relief and be an effective treatment option for people with joint pain, back, or neck issues, it can also be performed preventatively. This means that even people who do not have issues with their neck, back, or other musculoskeletal problems can benefit from preventative care from a chiropractor.

As with most things, when it comes to musculoskeletal health, prevention is always better than a cure.

By visiting a chiropractor for preventative treatment, they will be able to identify any issues (such as poor posture or alignment) before they become a problem. They will then be able to provide the necessary treatment to correct these issues (e.g. making manual adjustments for improving your posture, range of motion, and alignment).

For “normal” or “healthy” people, the benefits of chiropractic care include that it can:

  • Ensure the spine and joints are correctly aligned
  • Improve your posture
  • Restore the normal function of the musculoskeletal system
  • Increase flexibility and range of motion
  • Positively impact the nervous system
  • Prevent future injuries
  • Reduce pain
  • Improve your overall health
Sometimes, chiropractors may use other mechanical instruments to assist with treatment.
